Medical Marijuana patients have quite a large variety of products to choose from when visiting their local cannabis pharmacies. The different options can be overwhelming, especially for those who are new to cannabis medicine.

New patients often receive recommendations to start with low-dose edibles (five milligrams of THC or less) and to allow up to two hours for the medication to take effect. The onset time of edibles is slower than any other form of cannabis ingestion, so it’s critical to be patient with the process.

It can be tempting to eat a larger-than-recommended dose of cannabis edibles, but the consequence can be an unpleasant experience that lasts several hours.

Kylee Shumway, Pharmacist in Charge at WholesomeCo, says edibles work especially well for patients seeking long-term pain relief, and there are no patients for whom she does not recommend edibles.

Cannabis medicine comes in a variety of forms, and the tincture is one of our favorites!

Tinctures are liquids containing herbal extracts (cannabis, in our case), and they’re administered “sublingually,” or under the tongue. They can also be swallowed and absorbed via the digestive system, but the two large veins underneath the tongue allow for faster and better absorption of the compounds in a tincture.

Kylee Shumway, Pharmacist in Charge at WholesomeCo, says the tincture is the “most medical” way to use cannabis. That’s because tinctures can be dosed drop by drop, allowing greater precision than other forms of cannabis consumption.

This level of precision is ideal for a Medical Cannabis patient who’s interested in microdosing or finding the “just right” dose.

Shumway and Blake Smith, Chief Scientific Officer at Zion Medicinal, agree that tinctures can benefit nearly every Medical Cannabis patient.

Talk to Kylee Shumway or your local Medical Cannabis pharmacist to learn about the tinctures that may help with your condition.

Do you find yourself using more and more cannabis to achieve the same medicinal effect that smaller doses once gave you? There is a simple way to fix it!

Living cannabis-free for at least 48-hours may seem daunting, but this tolerance break or “t-break” can have incredible rewards.

In this episode of Discover Marijuana, Tim, Kylee, and Blake go over the reasons for tolerance breaks, how often they should be taken, and the biochemistry of tolerances to chemicals like THC.

Resetting your tolerance gives you the chance to find your “just right” dose, or the minimum effective dose to treat your condition. It’s also a great way to cut back on cannabis spending!

If you’re serious about maximizing the benefits of your next t-break, follow the “Reset Your Tolerance” guide at https://utahmarijuana.org/guides

Nausea is one of the most well-studied conditions for which cannabis can provide relief. In Utah, persistent nausea is one of the qualifying conditions that can make a person eligible to participate in the state’s Medical Cannabis program.

In this episode of Discover Marijuana, we explore how cannabis treats nausea, and some of the cannabis delivery methods nausea patients can use to feel better.

Some patients like to use tinctures for treating nausea, while others find tinctures upset their stomachs.

Each of Utah’s Medical Cannabis pharmacies employ pharmacists like Kylee Shumway, Pharmacist in Charge at WholesomeCo in Bountiful. By consulting with Shumway or another cannabis pharmacist, nausea patients can start to pinpoint the strains, cannabinoid ratios, delivery methods, and doses that work best.

Sometimes cannabis is used to mask nausea rather than treat the root cause. Cannabigerol (CBG), on the other hand, can reduce inflammation in the gut, one of the causes of nausea.

Another way cannabis helps with nausea is by stimulating appetite, or causing “the munchies.” This is especially helpful in cases where patients don’t feel like eating because they’re nauseous, but eating is exactly what they need to make their nausea go away.

It’s possible to make nausea worse by using too much delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Shumway tells us this has only been an issue for a couple of her patients. In fact, most of her patients seek treatments that *don’t* cause psychoactivity, or the “high” feeling associated with cannabis.

Anxiety-related nausea might be better-relieved by using cannabis products with cannabinol (CBN), which has an anti-anxiety affect.

We hope you’ll share this episode with anyone who might be curious about the ways to use cannabis for treating nausea. Subscribe to our channel now, so you’ll be the first to see our weekly Discover Marijuana episodes as soon as they’re launched.

We begin the third season of Discover Marijuana with an introduction to this season’s guests, JD Lauritzen and Kylee Shumway of WholesomeCo, a Medical Cannabis pharmacy in Bountiful.

Lauritzen is WholesomeCo’s Head of Legal Compliance and Government Affairs. He’s also something of a local celebrity, known by the “Leafy Lawyer” moniker and for helping clients with cannabis-related charges. He’s been interested in cannabis since the beginning of his college career, when he wrote a paper arguing for the legalization and taxation of cannabis.

Shumway is the Pharmacist in Charge at WholesomeCo. Her interest in cannabis medicine also began in college, when an organic chemistry professor sometimes mentioned the compounds in marijuana.

JD and Kylee are some of our favorite people in the cannabis industry, and we’re excited to have them aboard for season three! Subscribe to our channel now, so you’ll be the first to see our weekly Discover Marijuana episodes as soon as they’re launched.

Medical Cannabis can alleviate a variety of conditions, including some that occur in the gastrointestinal system. Cannabis pharmacists throughout the state are prepared to recommend the best strains and delivery methods for treating conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease, and persistent nausea.

Josh Fitzgerald, the Pharmacist in Charge at Deseret Wellness, says vape cartridges, edibles, and tinctures are all effective treatments for problems in the gut. Recently, delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol has shown promise as a treatment for gastrointestinal inflammation and other abdominal issues.

Delta-8 THC has therapeutic benefits without causing as much psychoactivity as its famous relative, delta-9 THC, does. Josh recommends products containing delta-8 for those with IBS and other gastrointestinal disorders. He also recommends cannabis products containing CBG and “kush” strains to treat inflammation.

As with any type of cannabis treatment plan, we recommend keeping a journal to track which marijuana strains, doses, and delivery methods work best for treating IBS and other gastrointestinal problems. Let us know in the comments what’s working best for you!

Medical cannabis treatment plans vary from patient to patient, but they all share the goals of alleviating symptoms and improving the quality of life.

Microdosing THC plays an important role in finding the minimum effective dose and maintaining therapeutic levels of THC throughout the day.

In this video, Utah Therapeutic Health Center’s Tim Pickett, PA-C introduces you to the Marijuana Dosing Curve and three key points along that curve. You’ll learn about the “low dose” or “microdose,” the “sweet spot” or “just right dose,” and the “maximum dose.”

We covered microdosing in depth here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8a4TWW_Vrs

In today’s video, Tim and Blake talk about how Medical Cannabis can be used to help with MS, or Multiple Sclerosis. Medical Marijuana can be used to help with many autoimmune disorders. How you incorporate them into your pain and symptom management routine takes some thought and considerations from your QMP.

Multiple Sclerosis is one of many autoimmune disorders that can be helped by Medical Cannabis. While Medical Marijuana is not a cure for MS it can help you to manage the pain that comes with MS, the muscle spasms, and other symptoms that affect your daily life.

When looking to get the optimal effect, you will want to use both THC and CBD to help with the pain from MS. Medical Marijuana has so many benefits when it comes to helping with your MS symptoms.

What questions do you have about Medical Marijuana for improving your anxiety or other mental health conditions?
