The legal status of cannabis in America is changing rapidly. Whether cannabis is legal, decriminalized, or fully-illegal depends on where you are in the United States. The situation can even differ city-by-city, as many cities have chosen to decriminalize marijuana, but state laws still forbid it.

Attorney J.D. Lauritzen says cannabis exists in something akin to a petri dish of American democracy. State and municipal government leaders can learn from each other as they develop their cannabis laws and regulations.

Over the last few decades, dozens of states have implemented medical marijuana programs. Several others have legalized adult-use (recreational) cannabis. A few states are still outlawing cannabis completely.

What about marijuana’s status as a Schedule I substance? Zion Pharmaceuticals Chief Scientist Blake Smith says the federal laws and regulations surrounding the drug are holding up FDA-guided studies.

Watch this episode for details on the shifting legality of cannabis across our nation.

Cannabis has a long, controversial history in the United States. Most states have medical marijuana programs now. But the effects of America’s “reefer madness” of the early 20th century continue in several others.

Decriminalization, and even legalization (at least at the state level) of cannabis in many parts of the US has been a huge sigh of relief for people who previously had to break the law for their medicine.

This episode of Discover Marijuana explores some of the ups and downs of cannabis acceptance in our country over the last several decades. Buckle up for a bumpy ride!

What’s in your cannabis? If you’ve purchased marijuana from a pharmacy or dispensary, you’ve probably noticed the information provided on the packaging.

At a minimum, the product is likely to be labeled with the percentages of THC and CBD it contains. Many cannabis companies are also listing the percentages for minor cannabinoids like CBC and CBN in their products.

It’s certainly nice to know these percentages when choosing a medication, but the packaging often provides little to no information about the terpenes in the product.

Terpenes are the organic compounds responsible for the unique aromas and some of the therapeutic effects of cannabis and other plants.

You can do your own research about the terpene profile for a particular strain but, as cannabis pharmacist Kylee Shumway notes, individual plants will always have slight variations in their chemical makeup.

Review the free Medical Cannabis education guides at utahmarijuana.org/medical-cannabis-guides for details on cannabinoids, terpenes, activation temperatures, and other fascinating subjects!

By now, you’ve heard all about cannabidiol (CBD) and its many uses for your health and wellbeing. But did you know CBD also has potential for your pets?

Talk with your veterinarian before starting your pet on any type of CBD product. It’s important to go over your plans and work out the correct dosing for your pet’s weight beforehand.

CBD has potential as a calming agent for pets. This is especially useful around the 4th of July and other holidays celebrated with fireworks.

CBD can also be used to treat pets suffering from pain or arthritis. If choosing a CBD product for your pet, we recommend working only with reputable dealers who can provide certificates of analysis for their products.

What’s the best marijuana delivery method? There are quite a few ways to consume or use cannabis. Here’s a brief tour.

We’ll start with a recommendation for every Medical Cannabis patient, from WholesomeCo Pharmacist-in-Charge Kylee Shumway.

Kylee recommends topicals, or Medical Cannabis products meant to be applied directly to the skin, for every patient. They’re especially useful for things like muscle pain, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, and arthritis.

But Kylee’s favorite cannabis delivery method is the tincture. Tinctures are liquids containing herbal extracts (cannabis, in our case), and they’re administered “sublingually,” or swallowed.

Vape cartridges contain concentrated cannabinoids and terpenes in oil form. To use one, a cannabis user will connect the cartridge with a specialized battery device. The battery device heats the oil into vapor, which can then be inhaled.

Dry herb vaporizers work in a similar fashion, except they’re used with ground, raw cannabis flower instead of cartridges. The device heats the cannabis enough to release cannabinoids and terpenes in vapor form without actually burning the cannabis. Some dry herb vaporizers also work with marijuana concentrates like wax and shatter.

Marijuana edibles work great for long-lasting, all-day relief from conditions like chronic pain or frequent seizures, but they take longer than any other form of cannabis delivery to take effect.

Distillate syringes contain highly-concentrated cannabis oils which can be eaten in tiny doses. One dose, according to Kylee, is about the size of a half grain of rice.

Although suppositories are an accepted medical delivery method, we don’t have cannabis suppositories in Utah.

Tim, Blake, and Kylee also mentioned cannabis inhalers and cannabis nasal sprays as delivery methods they’d like to see become available for patients.

What’s your preferred cannabis delivery method? Let us know in the comments!

Cannabis “dabs” are products that typically have very high concentrations of THC and look like wax, butter, honey, or amber-colored glass (called “shatter”).

Marijuana concentrates like waxes and shatters are not for cannabis newbies. That’s because they contain concentrated amounts of THC.

We always recommend that you “start low and go slow” when you’re beginning to work THC into your treatment plan. But to “start low and go slow” with something as potent as a dab can be very difficult.

Cannabis extraction technicians sometimes use solvents like butane, carbon dioxide, or ethanol to separate THC, CBD, and other compounds from cannabis.

There are also solvent-less methods for extracting cannabinoids, though these require more “biomass,” or raw cannabis plant material, than solvent-based methods to produce the same amount of finished product.

Another type of cannabis concentrate you may see at the pharmacy is the distillate syringe. Unlike the other concentrates we’ve mentioned so far, the contents of a distillate syringe are meant for ingestion, not inhalation.

Some other forms of concentrated cannabis are hashish, kief, and vape cartridges.

What are your favorite concentrates and what medical conditions are you using them to treat?

Marijuana vaporizers, devices that heat raw cannabis flower to release vapors for inhalation, are the method of choice for many cannabis connoisseurs.

Vaporizers intended for use with cannabis are available in a huge range of shapes and sizes. Some models require a power connection and a bit of real estate on your desk or table, at least while you’re using them. Others are portable and easily mistaken for writing utensils.

Some vaporizer devices are also equipped for the dual uses of cannabis flower and concentrates like shatter or wax.

Utah’s Medical Cannabis patients can get raw flower, if OK’d by a Qualified Medical Provider, but they aren’t allowed to smoke it. Dry herb vaporizers, like the PAX 3 or the Firefly 2+, help those patients stay in compliance with the law.

Because vaporizers operate at sub-combustion temperatures, it’s impossible to inhale many of the (often carcinogenic) hydrocarbons found in marijuana smoke.

Many devices allow the user to adjust the temperature, allowing greater control over the specific cannabinoids and terpenes released for inhalation. Delta-9-THC, for example, is released at 315°F/157°C. View the “Activation Temps” guide at UtahMarijuana.org/guides for more!

What are your favorite dry herb vaporizer devices, operating temperatures, and/or strains to use? Let us know in the comments section. Thanks for subscribing!

Topical cannabis products, or cannabis products intended to be applied directly to the skin, can help patients with a variety of conditions, including muscle pain, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, and arthritis.

Balms tend to have the longest-lasting effects, but some patients may prefer the familiar consistency of lotions. Medical cannabis topicals often contain THC, but they don’t cause the “high” feeling commonly associated with the drug.

Topical treatments often use other chemicals to help the body absorb medicines like THC and CBD. We talked briefly about one of those chemicals, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and why it has fallen out of favor.

What are your favorite topicals and what are you using them to treat? Share your experiences and help others Discover Marijuana in the comments.

Cannabis oil cartridges, also known as vape carts, are becoming one of the most popular ways to use marijuana. In fact, vape carts outsold flower in Utah’s cannabis pharmacies in the second quarter of 2021.

Many cannabis users prefer vape cartridges because of their convenience over flower, which requires a bit more work to reach the desired effect.

Vape carts work especially well for Medical Cannabis patients who need fast-acting relief from symptoms like pain or migraine headaches.

Some cannabis oil cartridges contain concentrations of 90% THC or greater, so it’s important to be mindful of dosing to avoid any unpleasant feelings.

To use a vape cartridge, you’ll also need a vape battery. Some batteries have adjustable voltage settings, which give milder effects at lower voltages and stronger effects at higher voltages.

If you’re a Medical Cannabis patients who prefers edible products to other forms of ingestion, you may find temporary relief in an oil cartridge while waiting for the edible product to take effect.

A vape cartridge combines convenience, fast action, and discretion into one small and potent package, so it’s easy to see why they’re so popular.

Read our “Patient Guide to Medical Cannabis” and our “Activation Temps” guide for details on incorporating cannabis oil cartridges into your treatment plan. https://utahmarijuana.org/medical-cannabis-guides/
